Like everyone bills are a way of life, we have to pay them whichever way we look at it. So why wait until they come in before paying them?

I always find the best method is to eliminate as much stress around paying bills as much as possible, you can focus this method on one or all. But be warned, once you get into the habit, you’ll wonder why you left it this long.

I credit this to my grandmother who always taught me to watch my money, enjoy what l have “electricity is there to be used, why go cold or sweat?” she would say. And because she knew they secret to budgeting wisely, she could! Mind you, she wasn’t wealthy in monetary gain, she worked hard for the majority of her life, but never let herself go without.

So here’s Nanna’s Bill Advice

Imagine this, getting the bill in the mail only to see the balance owing says $0 owing.

but not just that, there’s credit ahead for the next bill in advance! Normally that was how my bills were until the electrical hike, but fortunately that credit l had tied me over leaving me only a very small sum of $74.91 AUD left to pay on an electric bill. Unheard of right!

Here’s how l do my bills.

When l receive my bill which comes every quarter (every 3 months) l divide that bill by the quarter, then by 4 for every week in a month.

So going by the recent bill above, here’s what l estimate to pay weekly towards the upcoming bill for the next quarter.

$334.92 divided by 3 months = $111.64 per month

$111.64 per month divided by 4 weeks = $27.91 per week.

In this case, l will pay $50 per week so l can be well and truly in credit by the time my next bill arrives, paying that in full with credit and if l do this continually over the next 6 - 9 months l will have by the next 3rd quarter, my bill paid in full and l won’t need to pay a thing meaning l give myself a bill holiday. Then l just pick up the the routine again.

I recall a time l was almost 2 years ahead in credit with my electric bill and had a lovely time not paying a thing. And that extra money l had in my pocket was perfect timing because l had other issues that came up that needed my money.

It’s discipline to do this, but trust me, either way you will have to pay those bills, so, you can either do it my way and enjoy your electricity without cutting back on luxuries or wait till they come in then go into a meltdown wondering how you’re going to come up with the funds.
